The art of living
Dodge the throngs of tourists and make an early start at the renowned Tate Britain, just a short walk through Pimlico's ancient cobbled market streets. Experience the stunning gallery's unrivalled collection of works from the 1500's through to today, embracing Neo-Classical sculpture and Pre-Raphaelite paintings, along with works by contemporary artists such as Lucian Freud.
A relaxing stroll from the Tate along Millbank takes you past Millbank Tower and Lambeth Bridge, with stunning views of the River Thames. Continue through to Westminster for a glimpse of London's magnificent urban gothic architecture, with the breathtaking 700 year-old Westminster Abbey that hosts over one million visitors a year. Venture just off the well-trodden route of Victoria Street to find a piazza opening up to Westminster Cathedral's façade of balconies, domes and towers. England's administrative and political centre, this is home to the UK Parliament and lies within the area of the parliamentary division bell. This stretch forms a wonderful vista, with the grand 11th-Century Palace of Westminster dominating the skyline.
Lunch in the park
Forget the coach-party crowds and escape the hustle and bustle of the city at nearby Green Park, 47 acres of peaceful urban oasis. The unabashedly rococo Dukes Hotel lies adjacent to the park, for a light lunch in the conservatory overlooking the courtyard Zen garden. The hotel is internationally recognised for its fabulous Dukes Bar, which boasts the best martinis in town and, many have argued, worldwide. Alternatively, Battersea Park, just over the water, offers an eclectic blend of formal spaces that give way to the abundance of cafés and fine eateries to be found in Battersea Village and the quaint cobbled Battersea Square.
A feast for the senses
To satisfy the foodie in you, colourful Tachbrook Market is the place to go for fresh, daily local produce, followed by a trip to Elizabeth Street and Ecclestone Street for the best boutique food shops and delis.
Daylesford Organic is also less than a mile away, with award-winning meat, organic and biodynamic wines, acclaimed cheeses and an organic bakery and patisserie.
An afternoon well spent
If you rate couture over culture, the nation's finest shopping is within easy reach. Chelsea's King's Road hosts an array of fabulous boutiques and designer emporia including: Paul & Joe, Patrick Cox, Marria Grachvogel and Anya Hindmarch.
Indulge even further at the famous Harvey Nichols and Harrods of Knightsbridge, just over a mile away from Westrovia.
Dinner is served
After a hectic day spent experiencing London's cultural and shopping hotspots, a relaxed drink may well be on the cards at the nearby Ebury. The informal, discreet lounge area, with beautiful décor and a cosy fireplace, is the ideal venue for chilling out with friends. There is also a seafood bar and restaurant boasting two AA rosettes. For more formal dining, it's just one and a half miles to Gordon Ramsay's eponymous restaurant on the Royal Hospital Road, with the finest French cuisine and an elegant, intimate environment. Or the acclaimed Nahm restaurant at The Halkin in Belgravia is an inspired and inimitable experience, and the only Thai restaurant in Europe to hold a Michelin star.
A night on the town
Join London's glitterati in glamorous Mayfair, with an exceptional array of stylish bars, clubs and restaurants. Ramsay's Maze offers some of the best, most inventive cooking in London. Try a selection of tasting dishes as well as delicious cocktails, to be enjoyed overlooking the beautiful Grosvenor Square Gardens.
An alternative is Brian Turner's restaurant at the Millennium Hotel, for exquisite British dining, or sample the seafood at Scott's, one of the most fashionable eateries in town. Follow dinner with a trip to entrepreneur Robert Earl's Fifty, home to a nightclub, bar, two restaurants and most famously, a casino, all set over five floors. The marble columns and high gold and white ceilings of the Grade II listed building provide a spectacular backdrop to an entertaining evening.
